CONTEMPORARY-RETRO DESIGN, 2-Bedroom Apartment

STYLE

The quirky, avant-garde look of retro design is definitely making a comeback in modern day interiors. Retro interior design style is a throwback to the mid-twentieth century when the post-war 50’s and psychedelic 60’s saw a move towards brighter colours, bolder finishes and shapes, most likely as a backlash to the doom and gloom of the war-torn forties. Retro interior style takes bits and pieces from these past decades of uplifted spirit and brings them into the present to create a new style that is both modern and fun.

At the root of the colour scheme inspiration for this 2-bedroom apartment is the fabulous Eijffinger Twilight Stripes* wallpaper that proudly finds its important position on a wall in the Lounge. The funky stripes* tie together the various elements in this lively space over the modern canvas of the clean and light white laminate* flooring and off-white walls.

The teal/aqua* portion of this invigorating colour combination finds its application in the dominant colour choices for the Kitchen and the Bathroom. The purple portion is naturally chosen to bring luxury and warmth to the Bedroom, not without the help of the shag wall-to-wall carpeting* in this deep mysterious colour. Timeless union of black and white* is chosen as a foundation to build the style for each one of these three spaces. Bold repetitive geometric patters* (Osborne & Little wallpaper in the Bedroom, vinyl* floor in the Bathroom) and highly polished chrome* and other metallic finishes (appliances and various utility items in the Kitchen) round up this dynamic look and feel.

Black and white* is also selected to ground the Home Office and allow the dominance of the sunshine yellow* accents to pop and energize this modern working space. Ever moving reflections off the high-gloss* white floor add to the wakefulness and activity-stimulating atmosphere of this room.

In the Hall, playful circles* upon the geometric* high-relief patterned wallpaper in a warm butter yellow* colour brighten up this small windowless space and create interest and cheerfulness to a pass-through and often neglected type of room.

The “Retro” is also brought to life through shapes and forms – rounded* and curved*, geometric* or fluid* – materializing all across the rooms in furniture items, lighting and accessories.

Flooring Selection

The IKEA laminated floor, both the white Tundra (chosen for the Lounge, Hall, and entrance part of the Bedroom) and the high-gloss white Markland (chosen for the Home Office) kinds, is a very hardwearing floor, will not get discoloured in sunlight and its specially treated surface is very easy to clean.

The Activa rubber floor (chosen for the Kitchen in a beautiful terrazzo-like black and white pattern) has a multitude of advantages: made to last without wearing, cracking or breaking, permanent resiliency and elasticity, slip-resistant naturally hygienic non-porous surface, sound absorbent, economical due to its long life cycle and low maintenance, high degree of environmental compatibility and safety.

The Armstrong vinyl floor (chosen for the Bathroom in a diagonal black and white checkered pattern) is warm and soft underfoot, has protective coating that prevents staining from everyday spills, scratches and scuffs, will not rip tear or gouge under normal household use, meets low-emission standards for better indoor air quality and healthier home.

The Shaw high pile wall-to-wall carpet (chosen for the larger part of the Bedroom) is very comfortable underfoot, durable and resilient, treated for protection against household spills and stains, meets stringent criteria for low chemical emissions.

Paint and Wallpaper Selection

The main advantage of the Dulux Zero VOC paint (chosen for the Lounge in off-white teal, the Hall in light yellow, the Kitchen in off-white teal, the Bedroom in off-white and dark purple and the Home Office in white) is the elimination of the volatile organic compounds from this virtually odorless formula making for better indoor air quality. This premium quality paint with surface protector dries to a uniform abrasion and stain resistant finish that withstands repeated washing.

The Dulux Kitchen & Bath (chosen for the Bathroom in light teal) is also a Zero VOC product, dries to a tough, stain resistant, durable coating that is mildew resistant and thus appropriate for high humidity areas and surfaces subjected to condensation and frequent wiping.

The Dynamic Chalkboard paint in black is chosen for a small wall in the Home Office to provide a dedicated reusable space to inspire brainstorming and jotting down ideas in a more physical and energetic kind of way.

The Eijffinger, the Osborne & Little and the Brewster wallpapers, while clearly chiefly chosen for their visual effects as already mentioned above, are also washable and easy to clean. ♦
