Home Office Doubling as a Guest Room

This double-functioning space is designed for the hard-working individual who is required to spare room in their tight quarters for office tasks, but who is also considerate and hospitable and would like to provide an inviting and relaxing space for their overnight guests.

Clearly, the main challenge with the design of this type of room is that the space must be shared between two opposite functions: work and rest. The two ways of functioning should not interfere with each other in any negative ways. This coexistence must be easy-going, fluid, and above all harmonious. A very simple, but sound and no-nonsense approach is taken: a monochromatic scheme of blues in a contemporary setting.

Blue is an excellent choice for achieving the work-rest symbiosis. Known to stimulate clear analytical thinking along with creating a calming, restful atmosphere, this undemanding colour naturally provides what is needed for the unlikely blend of functions to be successful. Further more, the mentally cooling effect of blue would be equally beneficial to serve either one of the polarized purposes of the space.

The expanse of blue is balanced and highlighted with clean and efficient white. The contrast is set by the application of a stunning wallpaper pattern on a small section of one of the walls. The rest of the walls are painted a dark shade of blue contrasting with white trims and white laminate flooring. The bedding, as well as the office furniture and accessories are a balanced mixture of blues and white to provide much needed unity between the work and rest aspects of the space.

And the availability of the guest bed for a quick session of contemplation in the serenity of blues while trying to resolve a difficult work issue would certainly be a welcomed bonus for any overworked home study owner… ♦
