PLAYROOM – Brief

As its name suggests, this room’s purpose is to provide an environment suitable for children’s activities.

Once again beginning with the continuation of the hardwood flooring upon entry from the hall, the visitor is transitioned into a lively colourful space centred round the invigoratingly rich pallet of a pixel-patterned rug. The colour scheme of this room is designed to broadly represent a version of the sitting room’s scheme but in the context of children’s utilization. In order to achieve that, the use of vibrant hues is allowed with some larger degree of boldness while still using the neutral canvas of off- white walls as a necessary base to prevent from colour overwhelm. A chalkboard wall section with an endless potential for fun and creativity is included next to a wallpapered section featuring the popular interactive Frames design with its own potential to unleash a child’s imagination.

A children’s table and stools set in natural wood keeps in with the neutrality of the flooring allowing for the activities it is intended for to take front stage. Bold red and appropriately sized for the main users of this space, a warmly inviting sofa is included. A knit variegated pouf provides additional fun and playful seating for the youngsters. Two modular bookcase units with exciting colour and component configuration options and potential to rearrange as desired provide plenty of cabinet and open-shelving storage. Beautifully featuring basic geometric shapes and lovely robin’s egg blue colour, a 4-square front cabinet is equally useful and stylish. Additional shelves with playful circular supports provide more open surface for display items. Fun storage boxes and baskets complete the generous provision of storage for this space that is certain to need clutter management.

Clean and smooth, pleated shades in crisp off-white are the window treatment of choice for this room. This modern solution has a spectrum of advantages. The shade is easy to operate and maintain, the top down / bottom up option provides a variety of possibilities for directing and sectioning off light penetration, and the cordless option ensures child safety. The unlined shade allows a soft diffusion of light and folds neatly away with a minimal stack height for an unobstructed view.

General lighting is provided by a quirky-shaped, multi-coloured designer pendant controlled by a dimmer switch located at the room’s entrance. Task lighting over the children’s activity table is achieved with a second small pendant suspended on a stylish braided flex cable. Lowered to an appropriate for the purpose level, this light is controlled from two different locations: one at entry point and one in the table’s proximity for maximum convenience. A sufficient number of switched socket outlets are evenly distributed around for any additional task/accent lighting (such as the shown clamp-on LED spotlight in turquoise) and any other power needs. ♦
